Baccarat History

The present form of Baccarat can be traced back to Italy. Mini Baccarat has the same rules as Baccarat but has lower stakes and is played on a standard Blackjack shaped table.

How to Play Baccarat

There are three bets available: The Player’s hand, the Banker’s hand, or a Tie. Even though the player dealing is acting as the Banker, he is not obligated to bet on the Banker’s hand. After players make their bets the dealer deals a two-card hand to the Banker and Player. If neither hand is 9 a hand with a total of 8 is a Natural winner. If the Player did draw a third card, the Banker follows the rules at right. According to many, the game was first invented in Italy by a gambler Felix Falguiere, where it acquired the Italian name 'baccara', meaning zero in English. It's been suggested that the game was first played with a deck of Tarot cards in the middle ages. D. Eventually, baccarat evolved into European baccarat and the French game 'chemin de fer'. The interesting bit to observe of course is that the casino is taking no risk here; they simply charge a fee from each banker. The basis of this game is very similar, but the rules and payoffs are much less dramatic. A number of casinos have installed a smaller version of the baccarat game played on standard blackjack-sized gaming tables. The table is staffed by only one dealer who is responsible for handling the cards.

Baccarat Rules

Betting on Tie is not really recommended because it decreases your winning chances. Knowing the basic rules will help you understand what is going on on the baccarat table and will make the game more fun to play for you. So never mind what the other players bet on or how much they bet. At the beginning of the new game the shoe or the bank is given to the player on the right of the dealer. When nobody has a natural additional cards are drawn to determine the baccarat winner. You can bet on a Tie where you get a one to eight payoff but a Tie is very rare, it occurs less than once in ten hands. In Baccarat you always have to keep in mind that the fist digit in a two-digit number does not count. Unlike in Black Jack it is impossible to overdraw in Baccarat. Much like blackjack, two hands are played - a dealer and a player hand pitted against each other. After the players turn, and depending on both the outcome of the players hand and its own, the dealer hand will either draw a third additional card or stand. The hand closest to a total value of nine wins. Please note that both hands are allowed a maximum of one card draw. All cards numbered 2 through 9 are worth their numeric value. In order to calculate a hand total, simply add the value of the two cards. Once the player hand is finished and standing, the bank hand will determine whether it must draw a third card. The following guidelines determine what action the Bank Hand will take: On a side note, if the player hand does not draw a card, the banker hand will always draw if its value is lower than the player hand or if its own two-card value is 0, 1, or 2. Banker shows a 7, 8 or 9 (8 and 9 win) Banker Hand must Stand. Banker shows a 3 Banker Hand must Draw if player's draw card is a 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 Banker Hand must Stand if player's draw card is an 8. After the dealer has finished drawing, the hands are added up and a winner is declared. The player's objective is to get a hand that is closer to 9 in value than the banker's. The game is played modulo 10, that is if the total of the hand is greater than 10, then 10 is subtracted from the total. The payout for winning a bet on the banker's or the player's hand is even money, or 1 to 1 and winning draw bets are paid off at 8 to 1 odds or 9 to 1 depending on where you are playing. The other must do so also. With a total of 6 or less, his selection depends on the value of his two card total and the value of the card that the player drew. There aren't many rules, and the baccarat rules that do exist are fairly simple, they just differ from other games you may have played at the casino, so may take a little getting used to. Baccarat has a reputation for being a high rollers game and the tables are normally separate from the rest of the casino in there own section called the pit. Three dealers run the game and one of these is the caller who runs the game and stands between positions 1 and 15. If your score is below 6 then you must hit and receive a third card, if you receive a third card then the dealer takes another depending on your total. If the dealer has 2 then he must draw. If the dealer has 4 then he must draw if your card is a 2-3-4-5-6-7. If the dealer has 8 then he must stand. If the dealer has 9 then he must stand.

Tips

- The banker hand does carry with it a 5% vig, or commission, bringing the House Edge up to 2%. When the wager is counter-weighed by the player hand, the edge lowers to more near the 1% mark. in the long run, a player should be making more bets on the banker than on the player.
- For an eight deck game, the casino advantage on the banker hand is 16%, whereas it is 15% in a six deck game. For the player and tie hands in an eight deck game, the edge is slightly better in the eight deck games. Although this difference is so negligible that most players do not advise picking one version of baccarat over the other, it is advisable to take all the advantage one can possibly take.
- sometimes casinos will only impose a 4% commission, which brings the House Edge on the banker bet down to only approximately %. If you can get a 4% commission, by all means take advantage of it - and bet on the banker every time.
- Manage your money wisely, without a "system". Whatever you decide to follow, be sure you plan ahead of time.
