Baccarat History

How to Play Baccarat

The winning hand is the hand that holds two or three cards totaling closest to nine. A bet on a Tie pays 8 to 1. All Tens and face cards have a value of 0. After the Player’s hand is complete, the Banker’s hand is dealt out according to the following set of rules: If the Player did not draw a third card, then the Banker only draws a card to a hand of 4 or less. If the Player did draw a third card, the Banker follows the rules at right. It's been suggested that the game was first played with a deck of Tarot cards in the middle ages. Baccarat Rules

The only thing you are betting against is the cards. At the beginning of a new game or when the Cut Card in the Shoe is dealt, the dealer will shuffle all decks together and put them back in the shoe, called "The Bank". Then he will take the very first card out and whatever the value of this card is indicates how many cards will be Burned. The baccarat game is now ready to play. The player with the bank deals two sets of two cards, if of course the game is played by two players. The hand closest to nine wins. After the dealer has finished drawing, the hands are added up and a winner is declared. An ace counts as 1, two counts as 2, etc,, , up through nine counts as 9, but tens (jacks, queens and kings) count as 0. Both the banker and the player are dealt two cards, and depending on the value of the hand, might be dealt a third in either case. Although the payoff for winning a draw bet is much more appealing, the chances of actually getting it are pretty low. Baccarat rules state that winning banker bets are subject to a 5% house commission. This is of course because there is more of a chance for a banker win. The advantage is slim, in the area 0,,8%, but in the world of gambling that's really not that small. Baccarat has a reputation for being a high rollers game and the tables are normally separate from the rest of the casino in there own section called the pit. Dealers normally wear tuxedos and the surrounding are is quite lavish. Three dealers run the game and one of these is the caller who runs the game and stands between positions 1 and 15. A 9 is the best hand and beats all other totals followed by 8, if both the dealer and the player has an 8 or 9 the hand is tied and no money changes hands. If the dealer has 2 then he must draw. If the dealer has 4 then he must draw if your card is a 2-3-4-5-6-7. If the dealer has 9 then he must stand.

Tips

- The banker hand does carry with it a 5% vig, or commission, bringing the House Edge up to 2%. When the wager is counter-weighed by the player hand, the edge lowers to more near the 1% mark. When more 4's are leaving the deck, the banker bet has slightly better odds, whereas when 6's leave the deck, the player bet has a slightly better chance of winning than it does from the start of a fresh deck.
- Play Baccarat Games with the fewest decks. For an eight deck game, the casino advantage on the banker hand is 16%, whereas it is 15% in a six deck game.
- Play Baccarat at Casinos with the lowest commission possible. On the banker bet, the casino charges a vig, or commission to counter the players advantage.
- Manage your money wisely, without a "system". Unless you have a very hearty bankroll, and do not mind losing every bit of it, play with a money management system that does not try to chase after losses.
