Baccarat History
The game was introduced to the French Court in
the 15th century and became the favorite game among French nobility. Although it has always been a popular game in European and Latin
American casinos, it never caught on as strongly as Blackjack in US
casinos.
How to Play Baccarat
Baccarat is a very simple game to play with no decisions
made after a bet is placed. A bet
on the Player pays even money. Even though the player dealing is acting as the Banker, he is not
obligated to bet on the Banker’s hand. In Mini Baccarat a casino
dealer handles the deal. A Tie at any point
in the game ends the hand and pays Tie bets. There are many debates pertaining to the history of baccarat, particularly where the game was invented: France or Italy. It was later on introduced in France around 1490 A. Eventually,
baccarat evolved into European baccarat and the French game 'chemin de fer'. The interesting bit to observe of course is that the casino is taking no risk here; they simply charge a fee from each
banker. The infamous Dunes casino introduced baccarat in the late 50's. There exists quite a diversity today, especially so since it has made its way onto the world wide web. Although a few rules have been changed here and there to accomodate the individual taste of a certain country, the style has remained the same. The highest of the high rollers often come from overseas to try their hand under the chandeliers of the stylish Vegas baccarat rooms.
Baccarat Rules
Betting on Tie is not really recommended because it decreases your winning
chances. Knowing the basic rules will help you
understand what is going on on the baccarat table and will make the game more fun to play for
you. It doesn't matter which seat you take at the baccarat table because
unlike in Black Jack you are not playing against other players or against
the house. Each player is given the bank in
turn and can hold the bank as long as the bank wins. Once the bank looses
it moves on to the next player. If the hand you bet on
wins you get a one to one payoff. In Baccarat you always have to keep in mind
that the fist digit in a two-digit number does not count. Unlike in Black
Jack it is impossible to overdraw in Baccarat. After all is said
and done, the hand with a point total closes to nine
wins. After all bets are made, which cannot be
added to or retracted once play begins, the House will
deal four face-down cards - two cards each to both the
player and banker (House) After the cards are
finished being dealt, they are revealed and tabulated. If both hands are
the same, the game is deemed a tie. One factor is how hand values are tabulated. a baccarat hand will never exceed
three cards total. Tabulating the hand value is straightforward
and only takes simple mathematics of addition. In order to calculate a hand
total, simply add the value of the two cards. For instance, a hand of 6 and 10 will have
a total value of 6. For instance, a hand of 5, Queen and 9 has a
value of 4 (5 + 0 + 9 = 14 - 10 = 4) Card draw determination is slightly more
involved and is often explained with a chart. Once the player hand is finished and
standing, the bank hand will determine whether it must
draw a third card. The following guidelines determine
what action the Bank Hand will take: On a side note, if the player hand
does not draw a card, the banker hand will always
draw if its value is lower than the player hand or
if its own two-card value is 0, 1, or 2. (Thus the value of a hand is always between 0 through 9). An ace counts as 1, two counts as 2,
etc,, , up through nine counts as 9, but tens (jacks, queens and kings) count as 0.
- The maximum number of cards in a baccarat hand is three,,
- If the banker or the player has an eight (natural eight) or a nine (natural nine) on the first two cards dealt, no further cards are
drawn,,
- The player always draws when the hand is a five or less, unless the banker has a natural, and stands on a six and
seven,,
- the banker always stands if the player stands on a six or a seven
. The other must do so also. The player stands on a total of 6 or 7, but if the player has a total of 5 or less he/she must draw one card (face up)
Now it is the bankers turn. With a total of 7, he stands. The aim of the game is to get as close to 9 as possible and if you are nearer then you win. All picture cards count as 10 and aces count as 1. A 9 is the best hand and beats all other totals followed by 8, if both the dealer and the player has an 8 or 9 the hand is tied and no money changes hands. If your score is below 6 then you must hit and receive a third card, if you receive a third card then the dealer takes another depending on your total. If the dealer has 2 then he must draw. If the dealer has 5 then he must draw if your card is a 4-5-6-7. Once all the hands are dealt it is closest to 9 that wins.
Tips
- Depending on the number of decks being played, the casino advantage for the player hand wager is generally 15%, whereas on the banker hand it is only 16%. Since the house edge is relatively similar for both bets, it is presumptuous to entirely negate the player hand wager. Going back the card-counting issue, if a player does indeed insist on counting cards, they should pay attention to 6's and 4's.
- Looking at the House Edge, it is lowered, albeit not substantially, for every deck taken out of the equation. A slight difference of only one hundredth of a percent shows, which is apparent when looking at the House Edge. For an eight deck game, the casino advantage on the banker hand is 16%, whereas it is 15% in a six deck game.
- On the banker bet, the casino charges a vig, or commission to counter the players advantage. Usually this commission is 5%, which returns a House Edge of approximately 15%.
- Manage your money wisely, without a "system". Any system like the Martingale, which is designed to cover losses, should be avoided.
