Baccarat History
In the 1950’s the game was popularized in Vegas because of
the efforts of Frank Sinatra, a co-owner of The Sands at the time. Targeted towards high rollers, Baccarat tables used to be exclusive
territory with roped off access and dealers dressed in tuxedos.
How to Play Baccarat
Baccarat is a very simple game to play with no decisions
made after a bet is placed. A bet on a Tie pays 8 to 1. All
Tens and face cards have a value of 0. If
neither hand is 9 a hand with a total of 8 is a Natural winner. After the Player’s hand is
complete, the Banker’s hand is dealt out according to the following
set of rules: If the Player did not draw a third card, then the
Banker only draws a card to a hand of 4 or less. D. Eventually,
baccarat evolved into European baccarat and the French game 'chemin de fer'. Chemin de fer is very similar to
baccarat as it's played in American casinos today. The difference is one of the players banks the game instead of the casino. There exists quite a diversity today, especially so since it has made its way onto the world wide web. Although a few rules have been changed here and there to accomodate the individual taste of a certain country, the style has remained the same. A number of casinos have installed a smaller version of the baccarat game played on standard blackjack-sized gaming tables. It is played by the exact same rules, but lacks the accoutrements of the formal version.
Baccarat Rules
The baccarat game is now ready to
play. Each player is given the bank in
turn and can hold the bank as long as the bank wins. The player with the bank deals two sets of two cards, if of course the
game is played by two players. If
the first two cards dealt count Eight or Nine it is called a "Natural" and wins
automatically, unless both hands have the same
value then it is of course a Tie. At first the value of the cards might seem a little odd, but it's
really simple to understand. This
is not only the case with single card values but with the result of
two cards combined. So if you draw an eight in baccarat and a three, for
instance, the value of both together would be eleven but since the first
digit does not count your hand counts only one. The hand closest
to a total value of nine wins. The other is how drawing a third card is determined. Please note that both hands are allowed a maximum of one
card draw. If this
sum goes over ten, subtract ten and you will have the
final value. For instance, a hand of 6 and 10 will have
a total value of 6. I will try to simplify this as much as possible with a
few brief guidelines. If such is not the
case, the Player Hand makes the first move. Player shows a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
or 0
Player Hand must Draw. Once the player hand is finished and
standing, the bank hand will determine whether it must
draw a third card. Banker shows a 7, 8 or 9 (8
and 9 win)
Banker Hand must Stand. Banker shows a 4
Banker Hand must Draw if player's draw card is a
0, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7
Banker Hand must Stand if player's draw card is a 0, 1,
8 or 9. The game is played modulo 10, that is if the total of the hand is greater than 10, then 10 is subtracted from the total. If the players cards total 15, 10 is subtracted and the value of the hand becomes 5. An ace counts as 1, two counts as 2,
etc,, , up through nine counts as 9, but tens (jacks, queens and kings) count as 0. The other must do so also. (In online baccarat cards are always face up) A 9 value wins over any lesser total, and if neither player has a 9 then 8 wins over any lesser total. This is of course because there is more of a chance for a banker win. Three dealers run the game and one of these is the caller who runs the game and stands between positions 1 and 15. If either you or the dealer has a 6 or 7 then you must stand if you stand on a 6 or 7 then the dealer must hit on a score of less than 5. If the dealer has 2 then he must draw. If the dealer has 4 then he must draw if your card is a 2-3-4-5-6-7. If the dealer has 5 then he must draw if your card is a 4-5-6-7. If the dealer has 9 then he must stand. Once all the hands are dealt it is closest to 9 that wins.
Tips
- The banker hand does carry with it a 5% vig, or commission, bringing the House Edge up to 2%. When the wager is counter-weighed by the player hand, the edge lowers to more near the 1% mark.
- A baccarat game using eight decks will deliver a probability of 456% of winning on the bank hand, 442% of winning on the player hand, and 92% of winning on a Tie. For an eight deck game, the casino advantage on the banker hand is 16%, whereas it is 15% in a six deck game.
- Play Baccarat at Casinos with the lowest commission possible. On the banker bet, the casino charges a vig, or commission to counter the players advantage.
- Manage your money wisely, without a "system". If you want to take your chances, then by all means use a system - just know when to quit.
