Baccarat History
Although it has always been a popular game in European and Latin
American casinos, it never caught on as strongly as Blackjack in US
casinos. More
recently, a lot of US casinos have offered “Mini Baccarat”.
How to Play Baccarat
Baccarat is a very simple game to play with no decisions
made after a bet is placed. There are three bets available: The
Player’s hand, the Banker’s hand, or a Tie. The winning hand is the
hand that holds two or three cards totaling closest to nine. In
the classic game of Baccarat the deal rotates among the players. A Tie at any point
in the game ends the hand and pays Tie bets. There are many debates pertaining to the history of baccarat, particularly where the game was invented: France or Italy. Eventually,
baccarat evolved into European baccarat and the French game 'chemin de fer'. The result of the die decided her fate. There exists quite a diversity today, especially so since it has made its way onto the world wide web. Baccarat has a history overseas too, which is evidenced by its popularity among the Asian population who visit Las Vegas each year. The highest of the high rollers often come from overseas to try their hand under the chandeliers of the stylish Vegas baccarat rooms. In casinos based in the Portuguese territory of Macao, near Hong Kong, the popularity of baccarat is unrivaled. The table is staffed by only one dealer who is responsible for handling the cards.
Baccarat Rules
The most important thing you need to know is whether
you are betting on the Player, on the Bank or on Tie. Betting on Tie is not really recommended because it decreases your winning
chances. It doesn't matter which seat you take at the baccarat table because
unlike in Black Jack you are not playing against other players or against
the house. Baccarat is played with eight decks of cards without Jokers. If the value of the first card is a four, for instance,
the dealer will take the next four cards out of the shoe and discard them
in a tray next to it along with the first card. If
the first two cards dealt count Eight or Nine it is called a "Natural" and wins
automatically, unless both hands have the same
value then it is of course a Tie. When nobody has a natural additional
cards are drawn to determine the baccarat winner. Much like blackjack, two
hands are played - a dealer and a player hand pitted
against each other. Depending on hand outcomes, the player hand will either
draw a third card or stand. The other is how drawing a third card is determined. Please note that both hands are allowed a maximum of one
card draw. a baccarat hand will never exceed
three cards total. All
cards numbered 2 through 9 are worth their numeric
value. If this
sum goes over ten, subtract ten and you will have the
final value. (7 + 4 = 11 - 10 = 1) A hand that has drawn
and composed of three cards is calculated in the same
fashion. First off, know that right from
the beginning a hand of 8 or 9 automatically wins. Player shows a 6, 7, 8, or 9
(8 and 9 win)
Player Hand must Stand. Banker shows a 4
Banker Hand must Draw if player's draw card is a
0, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7
Banker Hand must Stand if player's draw card is a 0, 1,
8 or 9. The player's objective is to get a hand that is closer to 9 in value than the banker's. There are two hands dealt regardless of how many players there are: the banker's hand and the player's hand. Both the banker and the player are dealt two cards, and depending on the value of the hand, might be dealt a third in either case. With a total of 6 or less, his selection depends on the value of his two card total and the value of the card that the player drew. This is of course because there is more of a chance for a banker win. It may still be a good idea to try it online first, and within minutes you'll feel comfortable enough to play anywhere. Each player takes it in turns to deal from the shoe there is however no advantage to be gained from it and it is just part of the tradition of the game. Player put their bets on the numbered box in front of the players after the winner is called the other two dealers pay out or collect from the winners and losers around the table. A 9 is the best hand and beats all other totals followed by 8, if both the dealer and the player has an 8 or 9 the hand is tied and no money changes hands. If the dealer has 4 then he must draw if your card is a 2-3-4-5-6-7. If the dealer has 7 then he must stand. If the dealer has 9 then he must stand. Once all the hands are dealt it is closest to 9 that wins.
Tips
- Bet on the Banker Hand most of the time. Depending on the number of decks being played, the casino advantage for the player hand wager is generally 15%, whereas on the banker hand it is only 16%. The banker hand does carry with it a 5% vig, or commission, bringing the House Edge up to 2%.
- These same probabilities in a baccarat game with six decks are 457% on the banker hand, 443% on the player hand, and 91% on the Tie. For an eight deck game, the casino advantage on the banker hand is 16%, whereas it is 15% in a six deck game. Although this difference is so negligible that most players do not advise picking one version of baccarat over the other, it is advisable to take all the advantage one can possibly take.
- On the banker bet, the casino charges a vig, or commission to counter the players advantage. If you can get a 4% commission, by all means take advantage of it - and bet on the banker every time.
- Whatever you decide to follow, be sure you plan ahead of time. At the least, set yourself limits on losses and stake amounts.
