Baccarat History
The game was introduced to the French Court in
the 15th century and became the favorite game among French nobility. Although it has always been a popular game in European and Latin
American casinos, it never caught on as strongly as Blackjack in US
casinos.
How to Play Baccarat
In Mini Baccarat a casino
dealer handles the deal. After players make their bets the dealer
deals a two-card hand to the Banker and Player. If neither hand is an 8 or a 9 and there is no Tie
additional cards may be dealt according to a standard set of rules. The Player’s hand is dealt to first, and only if the current value
is 5 or less. If the Player did
draw a third card, the Banker follows the rules at right. There are many debates pertaining to the history of baccarat, particularly where the game was invented: France or Italy. It's difficult to trace back the origins of this game mainly because slight variations of it name are used in both countries, each wanting to claim it as theirs. And remained an exclusive game to the French nobility for some time before becoming a casino game. Chemin de fer is very similar to
baccarat as it's played in American casinos today. The basis of this game is very similar, but the rules and payoffs are much less
dramatic. There exists quite a diversity today, especially so since it has made its way onto the world wide web. Baccarat has a history overseas too, which is evidenced by its popularity among the Asian population who visit Las Vegas each year. The table is staffed by only one dealer who is responsible for handling the cards.
Baccarat Rules
The most important thing you need to know is whether
you are betting on the Player, on the Bank or on Tie. Then he will take the very first card
out and whatever the value of this card is indicates how many cards will
be Burned. Before the cards are dealt each baccarat
player has to make his bet. When nobody has a natural additional
cards are drawn to determine the baccarat winner. At first the value of the cards might seem a little odd, but it's
really simple to understand. In Baccarat you always have to keep in mind
that the fist digit in a two-digit number does not count. That is
why the Ten, Jack, Queen and the King count 0 and the Ace only one. This
is not only the case with single card values but with the result of
two cards combined. After all is said
and done, the hand with a point total closes to nine
wins. The hand closest
to a total value of nine wins. Two components of the game need clearing up at this
point. One factor is how hand values are tabulated. The other is how drawing a third card is determined. Please note that both hands are allowed a maximum of one
card draw. All
cards numbered 2 through 9 are worth their numeric
value. In order to calculate a hand
total, simply add the value of the two cards. Player shows a 6, 7, 8, or 9
(8 and 9 win)
Player Hand must Stand. The following guidelines determine
what action the Bank Hand will take: On a side note, if the player hand
does not draw a card, the banker hand will always
draw if its value is lower than the player hand or
if its own two-card value is 0, 1, or 2. Banker shows a 4
Banker Hand must Draw if player's draw card is a
0, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7
Banker Hand must Stand if player's draw card is a 0, 1,
8 or 9.
- The maximum number of cards in a baccarat hand is three,,
- If the banker or the player has an eight (natural eight) or a nine (natural nine) on the first two cards dealt, no further cards are
drawn,,
- The player always draws when the hand is a five or less, unless the banker has a natural, and stands on a six and
seven,,
- the banker always stands if the player stands on a six or a seven
. The payout for winning a bet on the banker's or the player's hand is even money, or 1 to 1 and winning draw bets are paid off at 8 to 1 odds or 9 to 1 depending on where you are playing. (In online baccarat cards are always face up) A 9 value wins over any lesser total, and if neither player has a 9 then 8 wins over any lesser total. Tied 9s or tied 8s are a stand off; no money changes hands (unless ties can be bet on)
If neither the player or the banker has a natural (a total of 8 or 9) then play goes to the player. The player stands on a total of 6 or 7, but if the player has a total of 5 or less he/she must draw one card (face up)
Now it is the bankers turn. There aren't many rules, and the baccarat rules that do exist are fairly simple, they just differ from other games you may have played at the casino, so may take a little getting used
to. Baccarat has a reputation for being a high rollers game and the tables are normally separate from the rest of the casino in there own section called the pit. The table layout is quite simple and consists of fourteen numbered positions seven on each side of the dealer; the number thirteen is omitted as it is considered unlucky. Player put their bets on the numbered box in front of the players after the winner is called the other two dealers pay out or collect from the winners and losers around the table. If the hand is greater than 10 then 10 is subtracted from the total, this means that the value of the hand is always 0-9. If either you or the dealer has a 6 or 7 then you must stand if you stand on a 6 or 7 then the dealer must hit on a score of less than 5. If the dealer has 2 then he must draw. If the dealer has 3 then he must draw if your card is a 0-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-9.
Tips
- Since the house edge is relatively similar for both bets, it is presumptuous to entirely negate the player hand wager. When more 4's are leaving the deck, the banker bet has slightly better odds, whereas when 6's leave the deck, the player bet has a slightly better chance of winning than it does from the start of a fresh deck. As for the tie wager, it should be out of the question since it gives a casino advantage of nearly 15%.
- Looking at the House Edge, it is lowered, albeit not substantially, for every deck taken out of the equation. A slight difference of only one hundredth of a percent shows, which is apparent when looking at the House Edge.
- sometimes casinos will only impose a 4% commission, which brings the House Edge on the banker bet down to only approximately %. Any informed player would see that this bet is one of the best in the casino.
- Manage your money wisely, without a "system". As for other bankroll management strategies, a good one is posted on this website.
